Trivial Pursuits

The second DC Improv Happy Hour Trivia night is in the books. You can get the results right here.

Or, you can play yourself! Here's an abridged version of last night's video round, "Monumental Questions." Once you've watched the video, you can get the answers at this page.

Overdue

The Library open mic (and from what we're hearing, the entire Library) is done. This continues the general trend of open mics thinning out lately. I'd be worried, except that this cycle has repeated two or three times in recent years. Sunrise, sunset ...

Blogados Gigantes

You might have noticed, the blog links on the right side of the page have changed a bit. A few of the almost-never-updated blogs were removed, and a few new ones with ties to DC Comedy were added. Go read every word of every blog listed and have a report on my desk by morning.

For the Theater Snobs

As always, I'm keeping an eye on the theater schedule for you. Not too much going on this summer (for now, at least), but a few new names have popped up recently -- Frank Caliendo in Baltimore in early August, and Richard Lewis at GW in mid October. Here's the full listing, which I always keep on the calendar page of this site.

Go Fourth

A lot of places have a limited schedule, what with this being Fourth of July week and this city being the center of the free world. Such is life.

You have options though! The DC Improv is running two special promotions this week. First off, tomorrow is ...

All indications are that it's going to be packed, so if you're planning on playing, get there with your team around 6:30 to save your spot (remember, the cap on players is 60).

Then on Thursday, it's the second Pay What You Can Night. You can read about it over at the Improv site.

Up in Baltimore at the Comedy Factory, they're actually running shows on July 4 with Timmy Hall as the headliner (the start times have been pushed back to accommodate people who want to see fireworks).

Comedy Zone Returns July 19

According to the blog run by the Comedy Zone Northern Virginia, operations resume on July 19 at a new location. Shows will now be at the Carlyle Club in Alexandria (411 John Carlyle St.), and on the blog they are describing a "Cotton Club" style show -- an evening featuring live jazz, variety acts, a headliner and then dancing.

The venues listings have been updated. That is all.

DC Comedy Fest Update

Nothing majorly new to report, except they changed the rules on the short film contest submissions. If you already submitted, this probably means you have to do it again. Here are the new instructions. Basically you have to upload to MySpace video now.

Oh, and they pushed the deadline back again this time to July 10. That means either a) a lot of people are submitting; or b) nobody is submitting. There still doesn't seem to be any fee for entering, so why not assume B and go for it?

AWESOME GOOD HAPPY TIMES!

One of the realities of the entertainment world right now: people aren't going out. Between gas prices and debt stuff and the usual summer slowdown, Average Joe isn't spending dough. It's not just comedy shows, either. Most bars on a Friday or Saturday are not really all that packed, and people NEED TO DRINK to forget their woes. They're just drinking at home alone, where it is much cheaper (and rewarding).

Establishments everywhere need volume to survive, though, so it's always intriguing to see how the press releases and MySpace bulletins and that sort of thing are worded. Great show! Special ticket deal tonight! Amazing performers! So amazing, in fact, that we haven't sold more than five tickets the morning of the show, and quite frankly we're a little worried!

Ironically enough, a lot of them are very good shows (or happy hours, or whatever), and if you ordinarily blanch at spending money, now is the time when you'll be able to score more deals and discounts than ever. Seriously, if you're a comedy fan (in Washington, Baltimore, or anywhere), subscribe to every club's mailing list, or become their MySpace friend. You're going to get walloped with all kinds of special deals and free tickets.

LOGO taping Saturday

Here's a little more information on that taping we metioned recently for the LOGO Network (it's the gay channel).

The show is called Laugh Out Loud, and there are two performances THIS SATURDAY at the Betts Theatre on the George Washington campus (800 21st Street, NW). I believe the showtimes are 7 and 10.

The show stars ELVIRA KURT, VIDUR KAPUR, TREVOR BORIS and JACKIE MONAHAN. You can go to at oneinten.org for more information.

Podcast Preview: Jake Johannsen

This Sunday, the DC Improv Podcast team (meaning me) will have the chance to sit down with Jake Johannsen. Jake is performing at the club from Wednesday through Sunday, and from what I remember meeting him last year, he's a really pleasant guy. Go subscribe to the Podcast through iTunes right this second, and that way it'll just download straight to your computer.

If you have any questions for Jake, e-mail them to chris@dcstandup.com and we'll see if we can squeeze them in. He's been on Letterman 532 times, just so you know.

Bethesda Comedy Club Cont'd

More from Dan Nainan, the guy behind the Bethesda Comedy Club:

"The Bethesda Comedy Club is seeking people to hand out flyers this Friday and Saturday, and every weekend, in Bethesda. In exchange, you will receive two dollars for every customer that you get to come to the club, as well as a guaranteed spot on your new talent night. Because of the high traffic in the area, a salary of $20 or more per hour is highly possible."

You can probably e-mail bethesdacomedy@gmail.com if you're interested.
