Wed, 23 Sep 2009 05:00:00 GMTMarketing, My Boy ...http://www.dcstandup.com/monoblog/?day=20090923http://www.dcstandup.com/monoblog/?day=20090923Some interesting reading: Paul Fahri's Washingtonpost.com media chat from Tuesday. Neat discussion about the complete breakdown of mass marketing and the fragmentation of culture. Things that are touted at a big deal (HBO shows, "The Daily Show," "Mad Men") often have, relative to the overall population, small audiences. But they do often appeal to the demographic of reporters and bloggers (more homogenous than you might think), so they get disproportionate amounts of attention. Not to say that such things aren't high quality, but huge swaths of the population are probably mystified by the Emmys, which often reward shows that not many folks are watching. This disconnect seems to engender a lot of anger these days -- people on both sides can be snide to anyone who doesn't share their taste. We have fewer cultural experiences in common, the more the market fragments. It makes you long for the days of "The Cosby Show." Or at least the sweaters. Here's the deal: if you're performing in the DC/Baltimore area ON A REGULAR BASIS (more than once every six months) and you aren't insane (by other people's standards), e-mail your bio, contact information and a picture to chris@dcstandup.com. We're trying to get a better picture of the DC comedy scene as it exists today. We have some gaps right now, and why not put your name in the hat? Can't hurt to have your face in as many places as possible.
